My First Celebrity Sighting at Barnard [Sep. 25th, 2008|11:05 am]
Yes, Christie Carlson Romano used to go here. Yes, Bob Saget visited last year with his daughter who is now a firstyear here. Yes, Sarah Jessica Parker was in Java City about 5 minutes before I was because her child was at the Toddler Center. Yes, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and James Franco are at Columbia Graduate School.

But have I seen any of these people here? No. I have not.

BUT I spotted a very good-looking and not so well known celebrity today at the Toddler Center with his adorable son:

Noice. FINALLY!

Event [Aug. 20th, 2008|03:31 pm]
Sometimes it's good to have a gender neutral name. It makes it easy not to lie, while still keeping anonymity and not risking getting hit on via text messaging.

E.g.: Text Convo.

Ghettoboy: Wats good
Me: Who's this?
Ghettoboy: I c u aint save my numba
Me: I think you have the wrong number
Ghettoboy: This aint tiffany
Me: [trying to sound manly] No sorry man this is Alex. Good luck finding your chick though.
Ghettoboy: Lol my bad man

The other day I got a text message that said "happy birthday ma." i wonder if I should've responded to that one...

I left my cell phone on the beach today. That's the first time in the 7 or so years that I've had a cell phone that I've lost it.

I didn't deactivate it right away...it was turned off, so I hoped somebody had found it and would call the number that said "home," like I did when I found a cell phone.

When I started calling and it started ringing, I decided to deactivate it.

Between the time I made this decision and the time my dad deactivated my account from home, the jerk made two international calls. To CUBA. Then he made 5 more international calls, which I won't be charged for.

I saw a Cuban on the beach. One who came recently, and would therefore have a lot of reason to call family there. He was the oh so nice cabana boy who helped me look for my phone when I realized I had lost it and went down.

The outgoing calls didn't start until after we had left him.

We're gonna call the numbers this person called, and try to get his name or something.

If it's him, I'm gonna spit in this guy's freakin' face. My uncle's been tipping him like mad this whole trip. If he did this, he's lower than low. I have no sympathy. Even if he is from Cuba.

Scarily Accurate [Feb. 5th, 2008|11:15 pm]

Your time of day has a split personality -- sometimes it's sweat-streaked and loud, and you're on the dance floor, getting your third wind, and shouting lyrics like you'll never run out of energy. You are the time of night that carves itself into your memory forever, because you'll never forget how much you love these people and this moment and this song. It's not always about unforgettable parties, though. Sometimes your late night (err… early morning) burst of energy happens when you're home alone. Those are the times when you say, "I flat out refuse to go to sleep until I finish reading this book, or typing this page, or reorganizing my entire closet." In either case, you are the time of night when it feels sort of forbidden to be awake, but you love accomplishing something special long after everyone else went to bed. And hey -- you can always catch up on sleep tomorrow, right?

I think I'm going crazy.
I just looked at myself in the mirror...and I didn't really connect the image with myself.
It's like...for a second I found it weird that I have a body at all...that I'm not just a floating soul...like my body isn't me, doesn't represent me.
And I'm not high..so I must be crazy.

Short Update [Jul. 1st, 2007|01:36 pm]
1. A Nobel Peace Prize Nominee has been sleeping in my bed for the past three days (Maria Elena Cruz Varela).

2. Remember Sarah, the evil stage manager from Les Mis? She's my fellow teacher for three weeks at Hoboken Children's Theater. !!!!

-Alex

EDIT:

Maria Elena Cruz Varela is a prize-winning poet who in 1991 organized a human rights organization called Alternative Criteria. She then wrote and distributed a manifesto for this group. Following this act of dissent, she was assaulted in her Havana apartment by a government-sponsored vigilante group. After being dragged by her hair down several flights of stairs, Ms. Cruz Varela was taken outside of her apartment building and again beaten in front of a cheering mob, which included a group of schoolchildren trucked in for the occasion. She was then forced to eat papers containing her writings before being arrested, imprisoned and tortured. Maria Elena Cruz Varela was named a Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International.

The Act of Dissent:

"Because I am a rational being, conscious of my individuality and prudent of mind, I absolutely refuse, with the only weapon at my disposal (the only weapon that interests me and that I consider effectual: The Word), to participate in what I consider to be "a closed system of impossibilities," a system that recognizes submission to a crude ideology, in which antagonism has the upper hand and is the only alternative. The noun dead is used far more frequently than its antonym life; the same holds true for war and peace, hate and love...Like the responsibility one has when printing books that are evaluated and read by others, I feel responsible for the role I am willing to assume at this historical moment. My point of view is No I do not agree. Experimenting with the lives of people must be stopped. This is my manifesto."

Ponderings... [Jan. 28th, 2007|01:37 am]
You know all that "be yourself," and "don't give in," and "speak up," and "stand up for yourself/your values/your beliefs/what you believe is right" shit?

Is any of it really worth it?

Seriously.

I love Barnard. It's the day before finals and what are they doing? The marching band plays through Butler library on columbia's campus, then comes to the Quad here at Barnard and plays everything from the Hora to Sweet Dreams while people throw their old papers out the window. This of course, is all after Midnight Breakfast, where they fed us free food (breakfast and non-breakfast varities) in the gym with music playing, and all this had a theme (this semester's theme was baseball). *happy sigh*

Bad Writing instead of explaining why I'm upset [Dec. 14th, 2006|08:47 pm]
What if I told you I didn’t care, or rather that I wouldn’t care about money…if only I didn’t need it, if I didn’t want things, both material and intangible, if only everyone else were poor. Would you call me a hippie? Would you call me admirable? Hopeless? Naïve? A liar.

What if you told me you didn’t care, or rather wouldn’t care about how much money I do or don’t have…if only I didn’t need it, if I didn’t want things, if I didn’t want to be a part of your life. Would I call you kind? Would I call you admirable? Compassionate? Naïve? A liar.

Whine whine whine [Dec. 10th, 2006|05:57 pm]
Viraj's recent livejournal spree has inspired me to begin writing in here again. I figure it'll also be a good warm-up for this paper I have to write for tomorrow. Of course, I doubt anything I write will be anywhere near as moving as Viraj's latest entries, but that's not really something to be jealous of. I've been looking foward to winter break for so long, and now that it's so close I'm a bit scared of it. I can't wait to sleep (possibly without this insomnia that's been plagueing me for about a month) without worrying about due dates and classes, but I'm going to be seeing so much less of Viraj and of so many other people, from both Barnard and Hudson and even the friends I've made through Viraj at NYU...and I'm not even looking foward to New Year's eve since nobody seems to be throwing a party. Viraj is right...I'm really way too social to be on my own. It's a good thing I'm not an only child and that I get along with Bibi or I might really be dreading the holidays. This is probably also why I am constantly knocking on Nicole's door for no apparent reason when I'm at school. I get lonely too easily. But I guess I'm just being a pessimist and looking at the sad parts instead of looking at the happy things, like being able to visit my friends at Swarthmore again and getting to decorate the Christmas tree while listening to Gloria Estefan's Abriendo Puertas album and Billboard's top 20 Christmas hits from the 50s. Stupid anthropology paper...you are the bane of my existence for the next few hours. Damn all the nightmares I had about various things last night for making me wake up with a headache and not be able to start this paper. And damn me for procrastinating until today to start it in the first place. Ah. Now I remember why I stopped writing in my online journal. I always end up whining.

I am happy at Barnard. I have wonderful friends (yes, you!) and family and a loving boyfriend who endures way too much for me. Stop whining.

:)

That's better.

Hope everyone's tests and schoolwork is going well and that winter break comes soon for us all.
